A library is the best thing I can think of... In RL it means the rustle of covers and the perfume of pages. All too bad, that this can't be on the web! But libraries _are_ on the web and what else could one wish for - besides the smell, that is. *sigh* TANSTAFL. Well, at least you don't have to be quiet :) First there were the EText archives, but in the last years more and more HTML-files have been added. This is even more exciting, since they mostly contain facsimiles. Sometime in the past... First I found it tedious not to be able to bookmark ETexts and thought it would be nice to take notes while reading. Then I wrote PEText, which is able to read both RTF-encoded files and plain ASCII. AFAIK the first and library. My first love :) A large archive with a very good search (author, title, subject) The name says it all. Not very large, but definitely a sight. Not a library, more a book. Some very good essays by the un-biased author. Quite small, but contains EZines, too. A large FTP-archive. Every book is shown in ASCII as a single page. Easy to save on your own machine for offline-reading. Wiretap is definitely a legend :) Alex' Catalogue of Electronic Texts Quite small, but... Look for yourself, I couldn't help loving the page. A German site. Some authors you won't find anywhere else, but unfortunately frame-based HTML, offline-reading is almost impossible :( Very large and an exceptionally good search. Quite unusual is the "Banned Books" section, a collection of books which were/are banned by one censor ot the other. Books On-Line believe in free speech, which I can but support. Still looking for a very special birthday present? This site contains a search I never found anywhere else. An interface to search various dictionaries. If you don't know the exact spelling of the word you're looking for, try them out. A very simple FTP-interface, but some works not found anywhere else. A nice collection of works, sorted by subjects. They had some difficulties over copyrights lately, since they believe that books _must_ be free. Look at their support-page. Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy An L-Space full of philosophical texts. Another library with mostly philosophical content. My favourite at their place: The Gem of the Net. Mostly Greek and Roman, some Chinese and Persion works. Both in the original language and translation. WOW! |
